Artist Statement:

At the beginning of the pandemic the City of Ottawa started to build a light rail station behind my studio. Every day I observed the excavation uncovering of layers of great Canadian Shield, and it made me think about time, my time and geological time. We measure time in years and days, but I think, to live fully one should be aware of each heartbeat, each breath, each line I am making. In this new series of drawings, I draw short, condensed lines with a calligraphy pen, sometimes I fill the paper from top to bottom. In this way I record my anxieties, my quiet thoughts, and my heartbeats. Drawing tied me to the present time.

Short line up - inhale. Short line down - exhale.

There is something meditative in this process.

Beneath the grass, stones have recorded thousands of years of history. Trees on the other hand witness droughts and floods.

Drawings are my diaries, like stones and wood they record time.
